Top Blokes bring young men’s perspectives to the table at Parliamentary hearing on pornography

Today, the Top Blokes Foundation is speaking at the NSW Parliamentary Inquiry into the impacts of harmful pornography on the mental, emotional, and physical health of young males. Top Blokes is excited to be part of this important conversation, bringing the voices of young men to the table and advocating for meaningful change in how we address the risks associated with pornography.

Top Blokes’ has over 18 years of experience working with young men in schools and communities. Young men have told us how pornography impacts their mental health, body image, relationships, and overall wellbeing through our evidence-based programs.

At today’s hearing, we will share what young men have told us about how pornography impacts them. We are grateful for the opportunity to contribute to this critical conversation,” says Melissa Abu-Gazaleh, Founder and Managing Director of Top Blokes.

“We have seen the damaging effects pornography can have on young men, from influencing their understanding of healthy relationships and sex to causing feelings of shame and confusion. We have seen the difference it makes when they have the tools and education needed to make informed, healthy decisions.”

“We are at a pivotal moment,” says Melissa Abu-Gazaleh. “The impact of pornography on young males is undeniable, and it’s essential that we address this issue comprehensively. By providing education, offering support, and engaging with parents and schools, we can help young men lead healthier, more fulfilling lives.”

It’s not just about the boys

Top Blokes is calling for a broader, systemic approach to address the harmful effects of pornography on young males. This issue is not just about individual choices; it requires comprehensive action from all sectors of society—education, healthcare, and families.

Top Blokes remains committed to working alongside policymakers, educators, and the community to address the broader issues surrounding pornography and its impact on young people.

Key insights and recommendations from Top Blokes

  1. Opening conversations on pornography
Young males are eager to discuss pornography but often lack a trusted adult to talk to. Many feel conflicted and ashamed about their use of pornography and are unaware of its potential mental, emotional, and physical health impacts. Top Blokes advocates for the development of educational programs that address these risks in age-appropriate ways and create safe spaces for these crucial conversations.
  2. The importance of parental and educational support
Parents and educators play a critical role in supporting young males as they navigate the challenges of pornography use. We call for increased investment in programs that help parents and carers talk openly about pornography, build healthier behaviours, and promote discussions about respect and consent.
  3. Breaking the stigma around pornography use
Many young men feel a deep sense of shame and stigma around their use of pornography, which often prevents them from seeking support or guidance. When young men have access to safe, non-judgmental spaces – as we see in our Top Blokes programs – they openly discuss their concerns and start to think critically about their actions and experiences.

“We’re not here to shame young men for their pornography use,” says Melissa Abu-Gazaleh.

“What we aim to do is break the silence and create a space where they feel heard and understood. When young men are equipped with the right knowledge, they’re able to make healthier choices and engage in positive behaviours around intimacy and relationships.”

By offering education and support, we empower young males to make informed decisions and adopt healthier perspectives on relationships and wellbeing.

  1. Educational initiatives and policy advocacy
Top Blokes strongly supports the development of comprehensive education in schools that includes pornography literacy. This education should focus not only on the dangers of pornography but also on fostering healthy relationships, self-respect, mutual consent and safe internet use. We also recommend stronger regulations to prevent harmful content from being marketed to young people, particularly through social media and video games.
